Customizing the Quick Access Toolbar

Everyone seems to have their own opinion about the Ribbon interface in AutoCAD 2010. Some people are fans of it and some are not. But one feature of the interface that most people seem to like is the Quick Access Toolbar. You may not know it by name but I am sure that you have probably seen and used the Quick Access Toolbar many times. It is displayed at the top of the AutoCAD window, next to the Menu Browser. By default it includes six frequently used tools: New, Open, Save, Plot, Undo, and Redo.

Out of the box the Quick Access Toolbar is nice. But wouldn’t it be great if you could easily add commands to it? The good news is that you can. Just right-click on any command on the ribbon and you will get the option to “Add to Quick Access Toolbar”.

You can even do this with the Layer Combo Control as shown above. This adds one of my favorite and most frequently used commands to the Quick Access Toolbar as shown below.  This will make the Layer Combo Control, or whatever tool(s) you put there, available no matter which ribbon tab is displayed.

You can also do more detailed customization of the Quick Access Toolbar with the CUI command. However, you can accomplish a lot with a simple right-click.
